The help that was always missing

Ask any parent of a GCSE English student where the difficulty lies, and you will hear the same answer. Your child writes a practice essay, and then it sits there. You can tell it is not bad, but you cannot say whether it is a grade 4 or a grade 7 – or what single change would move it up. The one person who can tell you, an examiner, charges thirty to forty pounds an hour, and is usually already booked.
